In the first reading, the definition of being literate is questioned. It is hard to measure but Hirsch believes students today are not literate. He believes the schools have become lax when teaching children, it has become too easy. He has a plan to make all of America literate and cultured with a 63 paged list. Critics say his plan is too fact based and would not allow students to apply information. His list is also non diverse and mainly applies to white-European culture. The main topic of literacy is quetioned and it is diffcult to answer.

In theyoutube video, the idea of content learning is stressed. One must understand what they are reading and have a background knowledge of the reading to be considered literate. Has a lot to do with social class. Has to do with more than just reading, must understand culture this way as well. Hirsch not popular, because schools have been doing it differently for so long, it does not fit into their curriculum. He says there should be an order in teaching. Relates to what allows some to be citizens. Believes in rules and order. Wants it to be more like learning history.

I find both of these very interestign. I think it is difficult to definewhat makes someonoe literate. I think the way Hirsh wants to make people literate is not the way to go. It is very context based and very controlled. I do not think students would learn well that way today. His idea is a very good one but going about it may be difficult.
